ATRI

In reference to the submission for the inclusion of the Atri-Cerrano site on the UNESCO World Heritage List, we can say that the historic centre of Atri is identified as one of three “main areas” (A), together with the Regional Reserve Badlands of Atri (B) and the Tower of Cerrano Marine Protected Area (C) (to this end, you can see the previous post “Submission to UNESCO for the Atri-Cerrano site”). Fauna in the pinewoods

Pigliamosche

The pinewood is the realm of the european squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris). The birds that have been reported so far are: goldcrest (Regulus regulus), short-toed treecreeper (Certhia brachydactyla), wren (Troglodytes troglodytes), Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata), robin (Erithacus rubecula), house sparrow (Passer domesticus), blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus)… This forest habitat is home to many insects: ants, ladybugs, beetles, etc..

Ambiente dunale

Duna e torre

Drastically compromised by exploitation of sandy shores for urbanization, beach tourism and excessive human trampling, the dune habitat is in relatively good conditions in the Marine Protected Area Torre del Cerrano, where it numbers different plant species, which are essential for the formation and conservation of the dune. The sand flora, adapted to survive the hostile coastal environment, characterized by arid soil with high concentrations of sodium chloride, intense sunshine and ventilation, has species of absolute importance including Pancratium maritimum (Sea Daffodil), Verbascum niveum, Echinophora spinosa, Eryngium maritimum, Salsola kali, Medicago maritima, Agropyron junceum, Euphorbia peplis, Cakile maritima, Sprolobolus pungens, Calystegia soldanella (Shore bindweed), Cyperus capitatus, Ammophila litoralis, etc. There are also some alien species: Yucca gloriosa, Cenchrus incertus and Erigeron canadensis.
